ECO Canada and Ocean Alliance Canada (OAC) are proud to present Wave Makers: Blue Career Stories, an inspiring video series that highlights the dynamic and diverse career paths within Canada’s environmental and ocean sectors.
This feature explores the work of the Ocean Tracking Network, a leader in marine research and ocean stewardship.
Since 2008, OTN has been advancing marine science through the deployment of cutting-edge ocean monitoring technologies, autonomous vehicles, and remotely operated systems across key ocean regions and inland waters. By generating critical knowledge about aquatic animal movements, habitats, and survival, OTN supports sustainable resource management and informs conservation efforts at provincial, national, and international levels.
The video showcases three stages of professional growth: early career, mid-career, and senior leadership. Through personal stories, it illustrates how careers in ocean science evolve and the variety of roles available within the blue economy.

Featured in the video are:
- Jon Pye, Director of Data Operations
“If I could send one message to someone considering a career in the ocean sector, or with OTN specifically, I’d like to tell them there’s a place for them here to take their motivation and desire to make a difference in the world and to make an impact.”
- Sean Potter, Technical Engineer
“I think my perception beforehand was that there were some pretty set industries, with defined roles. I didn’t realize that things were quite so varied and in an exciting and developmental stage.”
- Cassandra Hartery, Global Network Manager
“Working on the ocean, that’s something that’s never going to go away. It’s, of anything, only continuing to expand.”
Each individual shares insights into their motivations that drive them to pursue meaningful work in ocean conservation. The series emphasizes the importance of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning in shaping the future of Canada’s ocean sector.
More than just a career overview, Wave Makers celebrates the people behind the roles who are advancing marine protection and sustainability across the country.
